For me ‘Do you want to go on a car cruise?’ is a statement right up there with ‘Steak okay for dinner?’ and ‘I’ve filled the fridge with your favourite beer, enjoy!’ It’s not something I hear often but I rarely say no when it does. And so before I knew it I was in the in laws HR Holden, ready to be part of a great cruise with the BSCCC (Bendigo Sports and Classic Car Club.)
Long time no update
And it’s fair to say I’ve been pretty busy behind the scenes. The focus has been on my son’s surgery and removing a tumour on his brain (good news there – all has gone very well) and with a lack of working on the car at the moment, I’ve wrapped up one blog and started another. If you need a break from the car stuff, make sure you check out One Man Many Plans, which is my attempt at personal world domination, one genius/crazy idea at a time. Think along the lines of get out of debt, buy a reliable car etc..
On that car note the Subaru is still holding on. I’m still working out options but being the holidays and not needing to go far, that’s on the back burner. I’m hoping this new year sees a drop in crazy car prices in the second hand market, god knows we need one.
But anyway, on with the cruise!
(Big thanks to Baz and Diane for the invitation to this BSCCC event – there was a lot on my mind pre surgery and this little break was just what I needed.)
With great weather on hand and ripper cars on show (it’s a small club this one but they set a record of turn ups for the day) it wasn’t long before I found myself wishing I’d brought my own car to play. And when I say my own, I mean any of my previous rides that would’ve fit in just find, being not such a common beast (ie The Rx7, Stagea or even the Soarer.) Still, with that thought aside I was quite happy to wander about and take many a happy snap.
The view from the back of the HR which was dictating the cruise route. The BSCCC convoy is go!
I ended up sitting next to the owner of this 300ZX at the brunch after the cruise and given that she was one of the seniors of the group, I really didn’t expect her to say that this was her car in the collection. But she shared many stories of ownership including how many mechanics are hesitant to work on it and how difficult it was to get the windscreen replaced when it cracked. Her stories reminded me of the first auto mechanic I took my Rx7 to who told me ‘Never bring this thing back..’ because he didn’t like how tight the dimensions were to get wiring into..
Representing the cult of the spinning triangle, not one but two Rx8s! In my heart of hearts I’d still like to own one but in my rational mind I know there’s far more practical options out there. Still..
A very nice Eunos in British racing green. Baz the father in law is still debating if he wants to get something like this or an 80’s muscle car for his new project. Personally I’d be leaning more towards the roadster, especially with fuel prices at the moment.
Brought to the table (well the day) by a mechanic I used to use a lot around town and family friend Graeme. Probably one of the only people in town who had more than half a clue about things when I had my Rotary and helped with the RWC when I took ownership of dad’s WRX. As you can imagine, this thing was as subtle as it looked.
I’m always of fan of seeing Z Cars still out and about (even if the price continues to climb on trying to buy one) and this was a beautiful example, even if the straight 6 it came with was no long gone.
Sadly I didn’t take any decent pictures of the Morgan that turned up as one of the last cars and worse, word went around brunch that it had an unfortunate bingle with a kangaroo on the way to the All Seasons Hotel as was taken home before it finished the cruise.
Still, that was the only downside to an incredible day put on by the BSCCC – great cars and great car loving people to chat to (I was right in my element around the tables later on.) I’ve been invited to host a quiz night for a bit of fun for the group in a couple of months time, so undoubtedly I’ll have a few more pics to put up then.
Oh and happy new year by the way, welcome to 2023!
